WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Greenville, South Carolina
WHAT LED YOU TO THE WORK YOU CURRENTLY DO?
I’ve always been passionate about entrepreneurship. Pretty much everybody in my family is an entrepreneur of some sort, so it was totally natural that the second I was old enough, I went out and stood on a street corner selling lemonade. That evolved into making my own jewelry and selling it. Basically, if there was a way to make a business, I was going to do it.
But when I hit college, I started heading in a different direction. I went to law school and then spent 15 years or more looking for my true passion – helping women bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. While my previous careers gave me the external success that I thought I wanted, I was really looking for something that was fulfilling for myself and that involved helping other people, too. I wanted to make an impact, and over those years of searching, I inadvertently acquired skills that set me up to really help other women achieve their potential.
IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My advice would be “Ask for Help!” Alone in our heads, we will talk ourselves out of anything that challenges us or appears scary.
WHAT’S THE GREATEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
Get curious about every setback you encounter and how they are actually setting you up for something greater. It’s all perspective that determines how you approach each day.
What have you found to be the most challenging part of navigating all the roles we play as women?
Managing Fear! I truly feel like that’s the greatest challenge for me and the women I coach. It stops us from gaining momentum and prevents us from showing up as big and bold as we are capable of being.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE SUPERSTAR?
Brene Brown – I admire everything about her. Her vulnerability, her willingness to show up, and the way she’s carved a new path for women.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM/VISION FOR WOMEN IN THE FUTURE?
Less than 2% of women-owned businesses make it past the $1 million mark of annual revenue. To me, that number represents that women aren’t leaning into the growth that they have in front of them and are capable of! My dream is for us to move that needle! For more women to actualize their potential by reframing and removing their mental barriers to success.
I want a future where women are more fulfilled and happier than they’ve ever been, and to see that represented from each home all the way to the largest corporation. I want to get to a place where it’s not just assumed that when a woman has kids, she has to quit her job, or when a kid is sick, that she’s going to go home and sacrifice her work and career. I want to see a future where there’s real shared responsibility and opportunity for women to be just as successful and fulfilled as men.
WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST WOULD NOT KNOW?
I’m an identical twin, and I’ve never eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my entire life (I’m not a fan of peanut butter).
WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER?
My intuition. I can intuitively understand people and how they feel. I can identify with their struggles and relationships and get a really strong sense of what’s going on in their lives. I can see people for who they are and, maybe even more importantly, who they can become!
WHEN YOU’RE FEELING DOWN OR LOW ON MOTIVATION, WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND THAT HELPS YOU GET BACK UP AND KEEP RUNNING THE RACE?
If it’s the normal day-to-day stuff, and I just have to get back to work or re-focus my attention, then listening to music is my go-to. A song can always change my mood. If I need to get my head back into work mode, I’ll usually stand up, walk around, and blast “Whatever You Want” or “I am Here” by Pink (she’s great for getting me in the zone).
For the bigger stuff, when I’m really feeling depleted or overwhelmed, then the answer is self-care. Too often we try to force our way through when our body and mind are telling us we need a break. Self-care is all about creating the time and space for taking that break. That might look like a lot of different things (hot yoga is what does it for me), but self-care means doing something that gives you new information and new energy. That’s why working out is so good. Or listening to a podcast or reading a book. It’s NOT sitting around and zoning out on TV.
WHAT GIVES YOU HOPE FOR THE FUTURE?
The change I see all around us and the idea that it’s all going to be worth it. That together we can all make an impact. When I look around, I see so many amazing and successful women doing things that even 20 years ago never would have been possible! I can’t wait to see even more of that!
HOW HAVE YOU LEARNED TO SCALE UP IN LIFE AND BUSINESS?
Step by step. Seriously! It sounds simple, but it’s so true! While it’s absolutely critical to have a clear sense of your end goal, looking that far ahead all the time can get really overwhelming. So, scaling is a matter of deciding on your goal and then working backwards to reverse engineer the steps you need to take to get there. Then you just take it one step at a time and stick to whatever actually needs to be done today.
SHARE WITH US YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT, ACHIEVEMENT OR SOMETHING THAT YOU DO WELL.
Something I do well is reinventing myself. Depending on how you look at it, I’ve now done that 3 or 4 times, changing careers by facing the fear and doing it anyway! But honestly, I feel like my greatest accomplishment has been starting my own company and making it viable within just a few months.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR WORST CRITIC, YOURSELF?
I call my support and get out of my head. I know that there’s nothing positive that comes from me being alone and inside my head. I think that holds true for almost every woman.
So it’s important to surround yourself with good people who support you, no matter what. And if that’s a small circle, that’s just fine. It will grow. The more you’re authentically yourself, the more you’ll attract people who are like-minded and loving.
HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE?
Frankly, I’m really bad at that…it’s something that my business coach and I are working on. But nothing feels more joyful and rewarding than taking a trip with my family. We love to travel. For the smaller victories, though, I make it a point to make time to be super-present with my family, to set work aside and enjoy time with the people who helped me get where I am!
